Cycle Description:

In a time when the political landscape in the U.S. feels especially fractured and uncertain, I find myself turning to music not to escape, but to remember, to reconnect, and honor the rich and diverse musical history of the United States.

This summer, I met some lovely singers– Sophie Michaux and Adam Simon from Massachusetts, who illuminated the historical context of some of my very favorite melodies and exquisite harmony singing that I learned from the Anonymous 4 American Angels album. 

I went into a rabbit hole to learn about Shape Note Singing and its historical and cultural significance.  It is secular, rough-edged, communal, and full of conviction. Its influence on American music is undeniable, and it inspired the program for this concert. I sang and met with our own local Denver shape note community. I hope to bring some of them in to teach you all more about this incredible singing tradition.

We’ll be mixing some gems from the Sacred Harp (the Shape Note songbook) with other, sometimes unexpected pieces. While it’s always subject to change ;) here are a few of the pieces cooking up in the pot!

We’ll also be singing some original pieces by the uber-talented Adam Simon. As always, expect some delightful surprises! I can’t wait to sing this music with you. 

Rehearsal Details:

We hold rehearsals on Mondays and Wednesdays. Each singer will choose either Monday OR Wednesday as their designated rehearsal night at the time of registration. We encourage singers to stick to their chosen rehearsal night, but also encourage attending the other night if you have a schedule conflict with your chosen night. Yay flexibility!

Wednesday Rehearsals
